CNG Lissner sale, lot 764

This specimen was lot 764 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $7,865. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Karl IV. 1859-1872. AR Speciedaler. Kongsberg mint. Dated 1865. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 64. Super original patina over subdued silver satiny fields. Extremely rare especially in this superb condition. One of only two graded, the other in AU 55. Purchased from Don Gilmore, April 1972." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. This type, recorded for 1864-69, is now rare. It was struck to the Danish standard (Dav-75) rather than the larger Swedish riksdaler (Dav-356).

Recorded mintage: 86,000.

Specification: 28.69 g, 0.875 fine silver, this specimen Ø39 mm, 28.90 g, 6h axis.

Catalog reference: KM 325; Davenport 245; Y 10a.
