Norway SB118-21279r.jpg

This specimen was lot 21279 in Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "NORWAY. Speciedaler, 1868. NGC AU-58. Here is an example where the grade does not necessarily reflect the quality. An always in demand type with plenty of detail and slight evidence of handling on the high points and the open fields. Attractive dove grey tone throughout with golden highlights towards the edges that pop out when tilted. Sure to be a welcomed addition to the next collection is enters." In 1907, Norway obtained a divorce from Sweden and became an independent kingdom under a Danish prince. Even before passing under Swedish rule in 1814, Norway had enjoyed a separate coinage from Denmark. This type, recorded for 1864-69, is now rare. It was struck to the Danish standard (Dav-75) rather than the larger Swedish riksdaler (Dav-356).

Recorded mintage: 114,000.

Specification: 28.69 g, 0.875 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-325; Sieg-14; NM-6; Davenport 245.
