New Zealand 1942 penny
This specimen was lot 23392 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2020), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "NEW ZEALAND. Penny, 1942. PCGS MS-65 Red Gold Shield. Possessing lovely, smooth red color and carefully preserved surfaces. Tied with two other examples at this grade for finest certified at PCGS. From the Fenton Collection." This penny struck for George VI retained the tui bird reverse introduced with George V. This type was struck 1940-47. In 1948, the obverse was revised from "GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR" to "KING GEORGE THE SIXTH." The denomination was terminated upon decimalization in 1965.
Recorded mintage: 3,120,000 plus proofs, a better date.
