Australia 1942-I penny
This specimen was lot 32360 in Heritage Sale 3115 (Chicago, May 2024), where it sold for $3,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Australia: Prized Bombay Proof Restrike Australian Penny. George VI Proof Restrike Penny 1942-I PR63 Red PCGS, Bombay mint. A rare Bombay mint Proof Restrike struck for Australian collectors looking to obtain special examples of the Bombay-minted Australian bronze Pence and Halfpence from 1942 and 1943. Appearances of this special emission at public auction are few and far between, one of the very few records includes a pair (also including the Halfpenny) that brought over $20,000 in a Heritage NYINC sale all the way back in 2005." This type was struck in large quantities at Melbourne, Perth and Bombay (shown here). Bombay participated in producing these in 1942-43 only. The circulation strikes are not rare.
Recorded mintage: 9,000,000 plus 12,245,000 from Perth (no mintmark).
Specification: 9.4 g, bronze, 30.8 mm diameter.
