Netherlands East Indies 1838-J cent
This specimen was lot 76058 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. Cent, 1838-J. Surabaya Mint. William I. NGC AU-58. Variety with square-topped 3 and Arabic 1 on date." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck in large quantities (over 1.32 billion) 1833-41 with multiple mintmasters.
