Netherlands East Indies 1838-J 2 cents
This specimen was lot 45503 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $70. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. 2 Cents, 1838-J. PCGS VF-30 Gold Shield. A well struck coin, on a crude flan as usual for the type, with only a bit of peripheral weakness on the reverse." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck in large quantities 1833-41 with multiple mintmasters.
