This specimen was lot 73328 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. 2 Cents (Duits), 1837-J. PCGS AU-50 Gold Shield. A rather difficult type in such a high grade, this pleasing, light reddish-brown example stands as the only specimen for the date in the PCGS census." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and was steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck in large quantities 1833-41 with multiple mintmasters.

Recorded mintage: 54,812,000 along with mintmaster V.

Specification: 6.18 g, copper, 26 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 291, Scholten 709.
