Netherlands East Indies 1837-J cent
This specimen was lot 45504 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Costa Mesa, CA, August 2021), where it sold for $75. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Sumatra. Cent, 1837-V. PCGS EF-45 Brown Gold Shield. A decently struck Cent with well detailed centers. Some of the reverse shield is off the flan." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. This type was struck in large quantities (over 1.32 billion) 1833-41 with multiple mintmasters.
