Netherlands East Indies 1840-W cent
This specimen was lot 2147 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES: AE cent, 1840, an attractive mint state example! PCGS graded MS62 BN, ex Joe Sedillot Collection." The Dutch hold on the East Indies in the early nineteenth century was weak and the British captured Batavia more than once during the Napoleonic Wars. Dutch control was restored at the Congress of Vienna. In the 1820's, the Dutch had conquered Java, parts of Sumatra and the Moluccas and steadily expanded to include all of what is now Indonesia by World War One. The Dutch did not issue unified decimal coinage for their colonies in the Indies until the 1850's. Prior to that, each island received its own coinage. Sumatra received one and two cent pieces struck 1833-41 in large numbers (over 1.32 billion) with multiple mintmasters.
