Netherlands 1960 2-1/2 gulden
The first specimen was lot 1150 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS: Juliana, 1948-1980, AR 2 1/2 gulden, 1960, wonderful proof surfaces, very small mintage, NGC graded Proof 66+, RR." The second specimen was lot 3225 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $720. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS: Juliana, 1948-1980, AR 2 1/2 gulden, 1960, immaculate surfaces, blast white, NGC graded MS68, RR. Finest graded at NGC and PCGS." Queen Wilhelmina abdicated in 1948 in protest of Dutch colonial policy in Indonesia in favor of her daughter, Juliana, who would rule until 1980. New coin types were therefore necessary and were introduced in 1950. This silver 2½ gulden was struck 1959-66, then converted to nickel in 1969 (KM 191). No dates are rare.
