Netherlands 1938 2-1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 688 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $605. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS, Kingdom. Wilhelmina. 1890-1948. AR 2½ Gulden. Utrecht mint; muntmeestertekens: bunch of grapes and winged caduceus. Mr. G. Blom, mintmaster. Dated 1938. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Superb frosty coin with just a few light bag marks on the obverse. Overall extremely choice." The specimen is a common date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint for the Netherlands 1929-33 and 1937-40. Most of the dates are common but 1932 and 1938 have a "deep hair line" variety which is rare. The bust of Wilhelmina (r. 1890-1948) shown here first appeared on the ½ gulden of 1921 and was used until the end of WW II.
Recorded mintage: 2,000,000, a common date, tho the "deep hair line" variety is rare.
