Netherlands 1860 2-1/2 gulden
This specimen was lot 316 in Schulman auction 385 (Amsterdam, July 2025), where it sold for €80 (about US$113 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"KONINKRIJK DER NEDERLANDEN - WILLEM III 1849-1890, 21/2 Gulden of rijksdaalder, 1860 Hoofd naar rechts door J. P. Schouberg. Mt. mercuriusstaf. TYPE I a (1849-1874). Mmt. zwaard, Silver. S Graffiti, enkele krasjes. Zeer fraai. (kingdom of the Netherlands, William III, 1849-90, 2½ gulden or rijkdaalder of 1860. Obverse: head right by J. P. Schouberg. Mintmarks Mercury's staff and sword. Scarce, graffiti, some scratches, very fine.)"
This specimen is a middle date of a type struck at the Utrecht mint 1849-74. Most of the dates are common; this one is somewhat scarce. After the final issue of 1874, no 2½ gulden were issued until 1898. The 0.945 fine alloy seems to be unique to the Netherlands.
