Naples and Sicily 1582 scudo d'oro Fr-836a
This specimen was lot 4032 in Goldberg sale 69 (Los Angeles, May, 2012), where it sold for $4,600. The catalog description [2] noted, "Italian States - Naples. Scudo d'oro, 1582. Philip II, 1556-1598. Plain head right. Reverse: Arms. NGC graded AU-55." The second specimen was lot 33013 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $4,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy. Milan. Philip II of Spain gold Scudo 1582 MS62 NGC. Highly elusive in this decidedly Mint State quality, and a sought-after issue when encountered so fine. Soundly struck, with only isolated traces of striking softness, the surfaces lustrous and delightfully toned to a warm orange-gold hue that leaves little to be desired. The strike is well-centered as well, with all parts of the legends contained within the confines of the plan. A lovely relic of 16th-century Italian gold coinage." This type was struck for Philip II of Spain, he of the Spanish Armada. The Spanish ruled Naples until the death of the last Hapsburg in 1700.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: gold, this specimen 3.4 grams.
