Stack's Bowers 2022 ANA sale, lot 36192
SB822-36192r.jpg

This specimen was lot 36192 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Naples & Sicily. Scudo d'Oro, ND (1519-56). Naples Mint. Charles V of Spain. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, AU Details." We don't know the specification for the Neapolitan scudo, but the Papal scudo d'oro was lighter and baser than the Venetian ducat but matched the Florentine florin. We attribute this to Naples and Sicily as Charles' title of king of Sicily is mentioned on the coin.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.28-3.38 g, gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-836.
