Künker sale 424, lot 539

This specimen was lot 539 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €18,000 (about US$25,488 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg, 1688-1706. Reichstaler 1697, Münster. Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//Gekröntes und verziertes, ovales sechsfeldiges Wappen (Stromberg, Münster, Borkelo / Borkelo, Münster, Stromberg) mit dem Familienwappen von Plettenberg als Mittelschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt, zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur H · L - O (Heinrich Lorenz Odendahl, Münzmeister in Münster 1696-1706), oben die Jahreszahl 1697. Äußerst selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, fast Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 305, Osnabrück 2018, Nr. 3967. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg, 1688-1706, Münster mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: five helmeted sixfold arms of Stromberg, Münster and Borkelo with the escutcheon of Plettenberg, over a crossed crozier and sword, initials below, date above. Extremely rare, especially in this quality, attractive example with superb toning, about uncirculated.)"

This rare thaler was struck 1697-98. The date, which can be hard to spot, is at the top, divided by the crown.
