This specimen was lot 29 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €9,000 (about US$12,131 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MÜNSTER, BISTUM, Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg, 1688-1706. Reichstaler 1698, Münster. Brustbild r. in Bischofsornat//Gekröntes Wappen in verzierter Kartusche, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt. RR Attraktives, sehr schönes Exemplar. (bishopric of Munster, Frederick Christian of Plettenberg, 1688-1706, thaler of 1698, Munster mint. Obverse: bishop's bust to right; reverse: crowned sixfold arms, sword and crozier behind. Very rare, attractive, very fine example.)"

All the thalers of Münster are scarce. This type was also struck in 1697. The town and the region were thoroughly devastated by the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The bishop succeeded in establishing the Counter-Reformation there and holding the region for the Catholic Church.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,06 g.
