Munster 1694-JO 3 thaler Dav-LS364
This specimen was lot 537 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €60,000 (about US$84,960 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MÜNSTER, BISTUM Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg, 1688-1706. Breiter dreifacher Reichstaler 1694, Münster. FRIDERICVS · CHRISTIANVS · D : G : EPISC : MONASTERI : Brustbild r. in geistlichem Ornat//BVRGGR : STROMB : S : R : I : PRIN : D : IN · BORCK : 1694 · Fünffach behelmtes und verziertes, sechsfeldiges Wappen (Stromberg, Münster, Borkelo / Borkelo, Münster, Stromberg) mit dem Familienwappen von Plettenberg als Mittelschild, dahinter Krummstab und Schwert gekreuzt, zu den Seiten die geteilte Signatur J - O (Johann Odendahl, Münzmeister in Münster 1692-1696). Von größter Seltenheit. Sehr attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, kl. Kratzer auf der Vorderseite, fast vorzüglich. Erworben am 9.2.2021 von der Firma Fritz Rudolf Künker, Osnabrück. (Germany, bishopric of Münster, Friedrich Christian von Plettenberg, 1688-1706, broad triple thaler of 1694, Münster mint. Obverse: bust right in bishop's robes; reverse: five helmeted sixfold arms of Stromberg, Münster and Borkelo with the escutcheon of Plettenberg, over a crossed crozier and sword, initials below. Extremely rare, very attractive example with fine patina, hairlines on the obverse, about extremely fine.)"
This is the first triple thaler we have posted from this state. Others exist (e.g. Dav-5592) but have evaded our attempts to obtain images.
