Muhlhausen in 1789, between Eichsfeld and Schwarzburg

This specimen was lot 71526 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Muhlhausen-Thuringen. 2/3 Taler, 1737. NGC MS-61. A type that rarely appears in auction. A crisply struck coin with flashy surfaces and mixed gray to dark gray toning. The fields exhibit some light scuffs and marks." There are two towns named Muhlhausen in Germany; one now in French Alsace, and this one in Thuringia, between Eichsfeld and Schwarzburg. Long an imperial free city, it was mediatized to Prussia in 1802. This issue accompanied a 2 pfenninge (KM 55), 3 pfenninge (KM 56.1), 6 pfenninge (KM 57.1), 1/24 thaler (KM 58) and 1/12 thaler (KM 59). The series was the first issue of coinage since 1707 and the last until 1767. None are common.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-689; KM-60.
