Muhlhausen 1737 6 pfenninge
This specimen was lot 74730 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $100. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Muhlhausen-Thuringen. 6 Pfenning, 1737. NGC MS-64. After nearly three hundred years, this minor still looks just about as fresh as it did when it left the mint. Apart from magenta-gray tone present across the tops of the devices, surfaces are pure argent and billowing with satiny luster. As the single 'top pop' in the NGC census, specialists should take note and bid generously, opportunities to acquire such a fine example almost never arise." There are two towns named Muhlhausen in Germany; one now in French Alsace, and this one in Thuringia, between Eichsfeld and Schwarzburg. Long an imperial free city, it was mediatized to Prussia in 1802. This issue accompanied a 2 pfenninge (KM 55), 3 pfenninge (KM 56.1), 2/3 thaler (KM 60), 1/24 thaler (KM 58) and 1/12 thaler (KM 59). The series was the first issue of coinage since 1707 and the last until 1767. None are common.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon.
Catalog reference: KM-57.1.
