The first specimen was lot 2037 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,100 (about US$1,483 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIEN, MAILAND, Karl V. 1535-1556. 1/4 Scudo o. J. (1551). RR Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (duchy of Milan, Charles V, 1535-56, undated quarter scudo. Rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 1029 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $1,041.25. The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY, Milano (Duchy). Carlo I di Spagna (Carlo V, Holy Roman Emperor). 1535-1554. AR Testone. Struck 1551. Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Pillars of Hercules set on waves, intertwined with banner. Toned. Good VF. From the J. Eric Engstrom Collection. Ex Numismatica Ars Classica 104 (16 December 2017), lot 162." The third specimen was lot 1375 in Sincona sale 90 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 1,500 CHF (about US$1,982 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[3] noted,

"ITALIEN Mailand, Carlo V. 1535-1556. 1/4 Scudo o. J. (1551), Milano. Gutes sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsfehler. Exemplar der Auktion Künker 206, Osnabrück, März 2012, Los 3056. Exemplar der Auktion CNG 87, Lancaster, Mai 2011, Los 1755. (Italy, duchy of Milan, Charles V, 1535-56, undated quarter scudo, Milan mint. Good very fine, Minor flan flaw.)"

Francesco II Sforza, duke of Milan, died childless in 1535, leaving the ducal throne vacant. The emperor Charles V claimed it and held it against the French until 1540, when he turned it over to his son, Philip II of Spain. As Philip II was then only 13 years old, this was not made public until Charles' abdication in 1556.

Specification: silver, the second specimen 28 mm diameter, 9.04 g, 5 h axis. The third specimen is 9.18 g.
