This specimen was lot 22606 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $587.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Milan. Denaro da 25 Soldi, ND. Charles V (1535-56). NGC VF-25. RARE type with Roman style bust and scene of river god. Deeply toned over all surfaces with no impairments or defects. Ex: New York Sale January 9, 2013, Lot #538." The type shown here was struck for the emperor Charles V, who ousted the French from Milan in the 1520's. On his abdication, the duchy passed to his son Philip, who added it to the Spanish dominions. The Spanish issues for Milan ended with the death of Charles II in 1700, when the duchy passed to Austria, which held it until the coming of Napoleon.
