Mexico 1914-Mo 5 centavos
The first specimen was lot 22376 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. 5 Centavos, 1914. Sharply struck, red and brown. UNCIRCULATED." This type was struck 1914-35. It replaced a nickel type (KM 421, struck 1905-14) when nickel blanks were made unavailable by World War One. The bronze five centavos were replaced by a smaller copper-nickel coin (KM 423) of 1936-42. Many of the dates of this type struck during or after the Revolution are scarce to rare. The bronze five centavos was demonetized in 1936 and withdrawn in 1937. The 1931 five centavos, one of the major rarities of twentieth century Mexican numismatics, was apparently struck but never officially released. There are also similar bronze one, two, ten and twenty centavos.
Recorded mintage: 2,500,000, a scarce date.
Specification: 9 g, bronze (.950 Cu, .025 Sn, .025 Zn), 28 mm diameter, plain edge.
Catalog reference: KM 422.
