These 1734/3 2 reales are of a series struck 1732-41 during the reign of Philip V (1700-46). Later issues of this reign (1742-47) show the shield interrupting the obverse legend. Gilboy notes the date as common, though these overdates are listed as very rare. The first example shows the denomination engraved with a larger sized punch than usually seen for this series. The second example is a variety lacking a pellet below the assayers' initials (MF) to the left of the shield obverse, and the assayer inital M was impressed with a punch intended for a smaller denomination.

Mexican numismatists hotly debate which side of the coin constitutes the obverse. Gilboy[1] depicts the shield side as the obverse as that side bears the king's name. However, auction catalogs and dealer listings more frequently use the pillars and globes side as the obverse, as that side bears the date.
