SB1122-71655r.jpg

This specimen was lot 71655 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1631-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer D. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Environmental Damage, VF Details. This Cob is weakly struck and circulated, but retains an identifiable mintmark and the two final digits of the date. There are large areas of flatness on the peripheries, though the shield and cross are well-centered. The surfaces are nicely toned to mottled gray, though there is a large patch of rough black corrosion on the obverse. Despite its flaws, a suitable representative of the date. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1618-34 with assayer "D". Few of these early cobs have legible dates.

Recorded mintage: unknown.
