SB0123-42487r.jpg

After the hammered coinage of Charles V, the government's need for fast cash caused the coinage to degenerate to mere cobs such as this one real from the reign of Philip II (1556-98). No coinage of Philip II bear dates; the oldest dated coin from Mexico is from 1607, during the reign of Philip III. Assayer O is also recorded for this type. This specimen was lot 42487 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $264. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob Real, ND (1556-98)-Mo F. Mexico City Mint.
