Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1840 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 1019 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €360 (about US$485 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MECKLENBURG, MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN, HERZOGTUM, Paul Friedrich, 1837-1842. Gulden (2/3 Taler) 1840. Feine Tönung, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Paul Frederick, 1837-42, gulden of 1840. Fine toning, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"
This is the most common of a three year type struck 1839-41. Mecklenburg-Schwerin lies in the far north of Germany on the Baltic Sea. Lacking rich soil or mineral resources, it has always been poor.
