This specimen was lot 33527 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $258.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mansfeld-Friedburg. Peter Ernst I et al Taler 1591 About XF, Minor mount trace at 1:00, otherwise a well struck example of the type." This type was struck 1588-99 in Mansfeld-Friedeberg and is among the more common thalers of the period. Double thalers (Dav-9509) also exist. Mansfeld-Friedeberg was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Duke Peter Ernst ruled 1532-1604; the line went extinct on his death.
Recorded mintage: unknown but fairly common.
Specification: silver.
