Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55700

This specimen was lot 55700 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mansfeld-Friedeburg. Taler, 1585-BM. Peter Ernst I. PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, VF Details." Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This type was issued 1580-85 and undated as part of the second joint coinage. It is fairly common.
