Stack's Bowers 2015 NYINC sale, lot 3686

This specimen was lot 3686 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $317.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Mansfeld-Friedeburg. Taler, 1597. Peter Ernst IV (1580-1626). NGC AU Details--Tooled. Minor field tooling. From the Rockaway Collection." Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This type was struck 1588-99 and is common.
