Künker sale 386, lot 5324

This specimen was lot 5324 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €500 (about US$646 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MANSFELD-FRIEDEBURG, GRAFSCHAFT, Peter Ernst I. Bruno II. Gebhard VIII. und Johann Georg IV. 1587-1601. Reichstaler 1595, Eisleben. Hübsche Patina, fast vorzüglich. (county of Mansfeld-Friedeberg, Peter Ernest I, Bruno II, Gebhard VIII and John George IV, 1587-1601, thaler of 1595, Eisleben mint. Handsome patina, about extremely fine.)"

Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This type was struck 1588-99 and is common. Duke Peter Ernst ruled 1532-1604; the line went extinct on his death. This is from the sixth of seven different issues of joint coinages.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.09 g.
