Sincona sale 69, lot 185

This specimen was lot 185 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$398 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Mansfeld, Grafschaft | Vorderortlinie Friedeburg. Peter Ernst I., Bruno II., Gebhard VIII. und Johann Georg IV. 1587-1601. Taler 1593, Eisleben. Sehr schön. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Friedeburg, Peter Ernest I, Bruno II, Gebhard VIII and John George IV, 1587-1601, thaler of 1593, Eisleben mint. Very fine.)"

This type was struck 1588-99 in Mansfeld-Friedeberg and is among the more common thalers of the period. Mansfeld-Friedeberg was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. Duke Peter Ernst ruled 1532-1604; the line went extinct on his death. This is from the sixth of seven different issues of joint coinages.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.68 g.
