Mansfeld-Bornstedt 1671-ABK 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 1880 in Goldberg sale 128 (Los Angeles, June 2022), where it sold for $78. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Mansfeld-Bornstedt. 1/3 Taler, 1671- ABK. Knight on horseback slaying dragon. NGC graded Very Fine Detail (Cleaned)." This type is listed in the SCWC for 1670-73 and is fairly inexpensive in circulated condition. The county of Mansfeld was a state between Anhalt and Saxony blessed with productive silver mines. It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The counts minted a plethora of thalers and an extensive series of minors. The minors are generally neglected by collectors as the thalers are readily available.
