Mansfeld-Eisleben 1669-ABK 1/6 thaler KM-66
This specimen was lot 1224 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €150 (about US$203 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, MANSFELD-EISLEBEN, Johann Georg III (1663-1710), AR 1/6 Taler, 1669ABK, Eisleben. D/ Saint Georges à cheval à d., terrassant le dragon de sa lance. R/ Ecu couronné. Fines griffes. Très Beau. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Eisleben, John George III, 1663-1710, silver 1/6 thaler of 1669, Eisleben mint. Obverse: St. George mounted to right, spearing the dragon; reverse: crowned arms. Fine scratches, Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1668-69 along with KM 68, which has the initials below the arms. Both are scarce. The county of Mansfeld was a state between Anhalt and Saxony blessed with productive silver mines. It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The counts minted a plethora of thalers and an extensive series of minors. The minors are generally neglected by collectors as the thalers are readily available.
