Mansfeld-Bornstedt 1669-ABK 1/3 thaler KM-118
This specimen was lot 1382 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $180. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Mansfeld-Bornstedt. 1/3 Taler, 1669-ABK. Johann Georg III, 1647-1710. St. George and dragon. Reverse: Crowned shield. PCGS graded Extremely Fine Detail (Repaired). The Augustana Collection." It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupied different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The properties were shuffled among the various lines when the counts failed to produce heirs. In 1580, the elector of Saxony seized most of the property for debt. This type was struck 1669-70 along with KM 119 and KM 120. The last line died out in 1780 and the elector annexed what remained of the domain.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
