Mansfeld-Bornstedt 1672-ABK 1/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 1383 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $84. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Mansfeld-Bornstedt. 1/3 Taler, 1672-ABK. Franz Maximilian & Heinrich Franz. St. George and dragon. Reverse: Crowned shield. Pop 1; 1 in 25; 1 in 55. Even wear. Lightly toned. PCGS graded VF-20. The Augustana Collection." It seems the various branches of the Mansfeld line all lived in Schloss Mansfeld but occupying different parts: Vorderort (outer castle), Mittelort (middle castle) and Hinterort (inner castle). The properties were shuffled among the various lines when the counts failed to produce heirs. In 1580, the elector of Saxony seized most of the property for debt. This type was struck 1670-73. The last line died out in 1780 and the elector annexed what remained of the domain.
