Anselm Francis of Ingelheim (1634-95) succeeded Charles Henry as archbishop of Mainz in 1679. Unlike many of his predecessors, he held no other office. Mainz was occupied by the French army in 1688 which was besieged by imperial forces in 1689. The siege and resulting evacuation by the French (taking everything with them not nailed down) ruined a town already in decline. This type was struck 1690, 1693, 1695. The gulden from Mainz are much more available than the thalers.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 16,67 g.
