Künker sale 404, lot 2550

This specimen was lot 2550 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €20,000 (about US$26,242 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DIE STADT MAINZ. DIE SCHWEDISCHE BESETZUNG, 1631-1636. Gustav II. Adolf, 1631-1632. Dukat 1632. Münzmeister Hans Jakob Ayrer. Der gekrönte und geharnischte König steht nach r. mit umgelegtem Mantel und Schwert, mit der Rechten das Zepter schulternd, in der erhobenen Linken Reichsapfel//Sechs Zeilen Schrift, darunter Jahreszahl 163Z und Münzmeistersignatur HE (ligiert), umher Lorbeerkranz. GOLD. Von größter Seltenheit. Winz. Graffiti im Feld der Vorderseite, sehr schön. Exemplar der Slg. Dr. Schultze, Hamburg, Auktion Adolph Hess Nachfolger 67, Frankfurt/Main 1896, Nr. 561. Erworben in der Auktion Leu 75, Zürich 1999, Nr. 1195. Exemplar der Slg. Julius Hagander, Teil 2, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker/Ulf Nordlind 196, Osnabrück 2011, Nr. 5033. (Germany, city of Mainz, under Swedish occupation, Gustavus Adolphus, 1631-32, ducat of 1632. Obverse: the crowned, mantled and armored king stands right with sword, scepter and orb; reverse: six line inscription, date and initials below, laurel wreath around. Extremely rare, graffiti in obverse field, very fine.)"

This very rare type was probably issued after the king's death at the battle of Lutzen.
