Künker sale 404, lot 2287

This specimen was lot 2287 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,249 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF DANIEL BRENDEL VON HOMBURG, 1555-1582. Die Münzstätte Mainz. ½ Reichstaler 1571 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1568 geändert), Mainz. Halber Bettlertaler. Mit MONETA : ARGENT - EA : MOGVNTINEN : auf der Rückseite. Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Brendel)//St. Martin reitet l. mit Schwert und teilt seinen Mantel mit einem am Boden sitzenden Bettler, unten der Wappenschild von Mainz. Von großer Seltenheit. Einhieb am Rand, sonst vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 412, Frankfurt/Main 2014, Nr. 1441 (Letztes Vorkommen im Handel: Auktion Adolph E. Cahn 65, Frankfurt/Main 1929, Nr. 1751 = 195 Goldmark, an das Stadtarchiv Mainz). (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Daniel Brendel of Homburg, 1555-82, half beggar's thaler of 1571, Mainz mint, 1571/68 overdate, with "MONETA : ARGENT - EA : MOGVNTINEN :" on the reverse. Obverse: triple helmeted quartered arms; reverse: St. Martin rides left with a sword and shares his cloak with a beggar sitting on the ground, below, the arms of Mainz. Extremely rare, gouged at the edge, otherwise extremely fine.)"

This scarce type was struck 1567 and 1571 only. A klippe version exists.
