Künker sale 386, lot 4701

This specimen was lot 4701 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €4,000 (about US$5,169 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Daniel Brendel von Homburg, 1555-1582. Reichstaler 1567, Mainz. Bettlertaler. Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Brendel)//Der n. l. reitende Hl. Martin teilt seinen Mantel mit dem Bettler auf der Erde, unten Wappen von Mainz. R Schöne Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. (archbishopric of Mainz, Daniel Brendel of Homburg, 1555-82, "beggar's" thaler of 1567, Mainz mint. Obverse: triple helmeted arms of Mainz and Brendel; reverse: St. Martin, mounted, divides his cloak with a beggar on the ground, arms of Mainz below. Rare, nice patina, very fine to extremely fine.)"

The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This very scarce type was struck 1567-68 and 1571. A klippe version (Dav-9457A) exists for 1567.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.06 g.
