Künker sale 404, lot 2288

This specimen was lot 2288 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €5,500 (about US$7,217 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF DANIEL BRENDEL VON HOMBURG, 1555-1582. Die Münzstätte Mainz. ¼ Reichstaler 1567, Mainz. Viertel Bettlertaler. Mit MONETA [drei Ringe übereinander] ARGEN - TE [drei Ringe übereinander] MOGVNTINEN [drei Ringe übereinander] auf der Rückseite. Dreifach behelmtes und verziertes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Brendel)//St. Martin reitet l. mit Schwert und teilt seinen Mantel mit einem am Boden sitzenden Bettler, unten der Wappenschild von Mainz. Von großer Seltenheit. Feine Patina, sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Warszawskie Centrum Numizmatyczne 72, Warschau 2019, Nr. 489. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Daniel Brendel of Homburg, 1555-82, quarter beggar's thaler of 1567, Mainz mint, "MONETA" (three rings on top of each other) "ARGEN - TE" (three rings on top of each other) "MOGVNTINEN" (three rings on top of each other) on the reverse. Obverse: triple helmeted quartered arms; reverse: St. Martin rides left with a sword and shares his cloak with a beggar sitting on the ground, below, the arms of Mainz. Extremely rare, fine patina, choice very fine.)

Durch die Wahl Daniels mit der Mehrheit von nur einer Stimme gegenüber seinem protestantischen Mitbewerber Richard von Pfalz-Simmern gelang es der kaiserlichen Partei, das Erzbistum Mainz nach dem Augsburger Religionsfrieden für den Katholizismus zu bewahren. Unter Daniel wurden zur Rekatholizierung verschiedener Städte und Gebiete im Erzbistum die Jesuiten nach Mainz berufen. In dieser Zeit kam das Eichsfeld zur katholischen Kirche zurück. (By electing Daniel with a majority of just one vote over his Protestant competitor Richard von Pfalz-Simmern, the imperial party succeeded in preserving the Archdiocese of Mainz for Catholicism after the Peace of Augsburg. Under Daniel, the Jesuits were called to Mainz to re-Catholicize various cities and areas in the archdiocese. During this time, Eichsfeld returned to the Catholic Church.)"

This scarce type was struck 1567 only. A klippe version exists.
