Künker sale 404, lot 2286

This specimen was lot 2286 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$10,497 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF DANIEL BRENDEL VON HOMBURG, 1555-1582. Die Münzstätte Mainz. ½ Reichstaler 1567, Mainz. Halber Bettlertaler. Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Brendel)//Der nach l. reitende heilige Martin teilt seinen Mantel mit dem Bettler auf der Erde, unten Wappen von Mainz. Von großer Seltenheit. Hübsche Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Auktion Hess/Leu 27, Luzern 1964, Nr. 253; der Slg. Dr. Rudolph Walther, Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 275, Frankfurt/Main 1971, Nr. 200 und der Slg. Heinz Beaury, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 386, Osnabrück 2023, Nr. 4864. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Daniel Brendel of Homburg, 1555-82, half beggar's thaler of 1567, Mainz mint. Obverse: triple helmeted quartered arms; reverse: St. Martin rides left with a sword and shares his cloak with a beggar sitting on the ground, below, the arms of Mainz. Extremely rare, handsome patina, very fine to extremely fine.)

Durch die Wahl Daniels mit der Mehrheit von nur einer Stimme gegenüber seinem protestantischen Mitbewerber Richard von Pfalz-Simmern gelang es der kaiserlichen Partei, das Erzbistum Mainz nach dem Augsburger Religionsfrieden für den Katholizismus zu bewahren. Unter Daniel wurden zur Rekatholizierung verschiedener Städte und Gebiete im Erzbistum die Jesuiten nach Mainz berufen. In dieser Zeit kam das Eichsfeld zur katholischen Kirche zurück. (By electing Daniel with a majority of just one vote over his Protestant competitor Richard von Pfalz-Simmern, the imperial party succeeded in preserving the Archdiocese of Mainz for Catholicism after the Peace of Augsburg. Under Daniel, the Jesuits were called to Mainz to re-Catholicize various cities and areas in the archdiocese. During this time, Eichsfeld returned to the Catholic Church.)"

This scarce type was struck 1567 and 1571 only. A klippe version exists.
