This specimen was lot 4702 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €11,000 (about US$14,214 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Wolfgang von Dalberg, 1582-1601. Doppelter Reichstaler 1586, Mainz. Doppelter Bettlertaler. Dreifach behelmtes, vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Dalberg)//Der n. l. reitende Hl. Martin teilt seinen Mantel mit dem Bettler auf der Erde, unten Wappen von Mainz. Von großer Seltenheit. Fast sehr schön. (archbishopric of Mainz, Wolfgang of Dalberg, 1582-1601, double thaler of 1586, Mainz mint. Obverse: triple helmeted arms of Mainz and Dalberg; reverse: St. Martin, mounted, divides his cloak with a beggar on the ground, arms of Mainz below. Extremely rare, about very fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This very scarce type was struck 1586 only. The archbishop also struck single and triple thalers in 1586.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 58.14 g.
