Künker sale 386, lot 4659

This specimen was lot 4659 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €2,600 (about US$3,360 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Gerlach von Nassau, 1354-1371. Goldgulden o. J. (1365-1371), Bingen. Stehender Erzbischof mit Buch und Krummstab//Gespaltener Wappenschild (Mainz/Nassau) in Dreipaß. GOLD. R Min. gewellt, fast vorzüglich. Erworben von der Münzenhandlung Ludwig Grabow, Rostock. (archbishopric of Mainz, Gerlach of Nassau, 1354-71, undated goldgulden, Bingen mint. Obverse: standing archbishop with book and crozier; reverse: trifold arms. Rare, slightly wavy, about extremely fine.)"

Gerlach was the first archbishop of Mainz to issue gold. His first goldgulden (Fr-1597) were fairly close imitations of Florentine florins. This one, slightly later, removes the fleur-de-lys in favor of the figure of the archbishop.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.50 g.
