Mainz (1394-95) goldgulden Fr-1610
This specimen was lot 4667 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €1,000 (about US$1,292 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MAINZ, ERZBISTUM, Konrad von Weinsberg, 1390-1396. Goldgulden o. J. (1394/1395), Bingen. Thronender St. Martin in gothischem Gestühl, darunter Wappen von Weinsberg//Mainzer Radschild in Dreipaß. GOLD. Sehr schön. Mit Freigabekärtchen der Reichsbank von 1938. (archbishopric of Mainz, Conrad of Weinsburg, 1390-96, undated goldgulden, Bingen mint. Obverse: St. Martin enthroned on Gothic stool, arms below; reverse: Mainz arms in trilobe. Very fine.)"
Friedberg states this type depicts the archbishop on the obverse; the halo around the figure's head leads us to agree with the auctioneers that St. Martin is intended. The other goldgulden of this prelate all feature St. John.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.50 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.48 g.
