Mainz (1392-93) goldgulden Fr-1612
This specimen was lot 2160 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,493 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF KONRAD VON WEINSBERG, 1390-1396. Prägungen mit Titel Archiepiscopus aus der Münzstätte Bingen. Goldgulden o. J. (1392/1393), Bingen. COR?D’ ° AR - E - P’ ° MOGVT ± Johannes der Täufer mit erhobener Rechten und Kreuzstab steht v. v., neben seinem Kopf Weinsberger Wappenschild//+ MOnETA • OPIDI : PInGWEnIS Zweifeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Pfalz) in Dreipass, in den Winkeln je ein Dreiblatt. GOLD. RR Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Goldtönung, fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Günter Felke, Auktion Kurpfälzische Münzhandlung 53, Mannheim 1997, Nr. 682 und der Slg. This is an early gold coin for this ecclesiastical state, which was a major issuer of goldgulden in the late Middle Ages. Conrad issued four goldgulden: Fr-1610 (archbishop enthroned/arms in trilobe reverse), Fr-1611 (St. John/arms in trilobe reverse), Fr-1612 (shown here) and Fr-1613 (St. John/four shields reverse).
