Mainz (1371-73) goldgulden Fr-1602
This specimen was lot 2128 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,036 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF JOHANN I. VON LUXEMBURG-LIGNY, 1371-1373. Die Münzstätte Bingen. Goldgulden o. J., Bingen. I - OhAnES [drei Ringe übereinander] A - REPVS [drei Ringe übereinander] mAGV [drei Ringe übereinander] Erzbischof steht v. v. mit Buch und Krummstab auf Podest//+ mOnETA [drei Ringe übereinander] In [drei Ringe übereinander] OPIDO [drei Ringe übereinander] PInGWEnSIS [drei Ringe übereinander] Vierfeldiges Wappen (Mainz/Luxemburg) in einfachem Dreipass, in den Winkeln je ein Dreiblatt. GOLD. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön +. Exemplar der Auktion Dr. Busso Peus Nachf. 426, Frankfurt/Main 2020, Nr. 954. This is an early gold coin for this ecclesiastical state, which was a major issuer of goldgulden in the late Middle Ages. Johann issued two goldgulden: Fr-1602 (shown here) and Fr-1603 (archbishop enthroned/arms in trilobe reverse).
