(Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Gerlach of Nassau, 1354-71, undated goldgulden, circa 1367-70, Bacharach mint, joint coinage with count palatine Rupert I. Obverse: the archbishop stands with book and crozier between the arms of Mainz and Nassau, privy mark above; reverse: the count stands with a sword on his shoulder between the arms of the Palatinate and Bavaria. Extremely rare, extremely fine example.)"

Gerlach was the first archbishop of Mainz to issue gold. His first goldgulden (Fr-1597) were fairly close imitations of Florentine florins. This one, slightly later, shows the archbishop on the obverse and the count palatine on the reverse. This type, struck at Bacharach and Bingen, is the rarest of the early goldgulden of Mainz.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.5 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.54 g.
