Madras AH 1174(7) rupee KM-390
This specimen was lot 962 in Stephen Album sale 47 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MADRAS PRESIDENCY: AR rupee, Machhlipatan, AH1174 year 7, posthumously in the name of the Mughal emperor Alamgir II, to a reduced weight standard, bold VF, RRR, ex SARC Auction 12 Lot 1258. Neither Pridmore nor Krause SCWC list dates of this type prior to AH1195, but others of these early dates are known. Cf. Baldwin's auction 40, lot 998, a similar rupee of AH1176 year 8, and Noonan's Auction 268 lot 257, the only two other examples of this early period that we have been able to trace." We don't like to dispute the august wisdom dispensed by the auctioneers, but the SCWC does mention AH 1176/8 for this type. We don't know why this coin is so much lighter than the specification.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 11.43 g, silver, 21.2 mm diameter, this specimen 8.59 g.
