Madras AH 1172(6) rupee KM-436
This specimen was lot 775 in Steve Album Auction 52 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MADRAS PRESIDENCY: AR rupee, Arkat, AH1172 year 6, proof strike, citing Alamgir II, reverse legend says struck in Arkat (Arcot) but this type was minted in Calcutta from 1830 to 1835, frozen date AH1172, rose and crescent, edge straight-grained, a superb example of this rare proof, PCGS graded Proof 62." This type was struck with a frozen date in Calcutta. It is catalogued under the Madras Presidency altho Calcutta is in Bengal. Many varieties exist (KM 403, 410, 415.1, 415.2, KM 427 and KM 436, shown here) along with half, quarter and eighth rupees.
