Sincona sale 6, lot 2487

This specimen was lot 2487 in Sincona sale 6 (Zürich, May 2012), where it sold for 5,400 CHF (about US$6,645 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ, Sammlung Dr. Charles Froidevaux Luzern Taler 1698. Ovales, reich verziertes Stadtwappen auf Engelskartusche. Rv. Der heilige Leodegar stehend von vorn mit Krummstab und Bohrer. Stempel von P. H. Müller. Selten. Aussergewöhnliche Erhaltung mit schöner Patina. Fast FDC. (Canton of Luzern, thaler of 1698. Obverse: oval arms, cherub above; reverse: St. Leodegar standing, bearing staff. Design by P. H. Müller. Rare, beautiful toning, choice uncirculated.)"

This rare thaler, the first issued in Luzern since 1622, is accompanied by an even rarer double thaler.
